Week 5, 2018 - On personalization, creative breaks, celebration - and more

Sunday, January 28th, 2018

My dear friend Garima Patet has written a nice piece on personalization in her The core essence of 'Personalization': Lesson from "Be Amazing or Go Home". It is so very true - as any one of us who have been given a truly personalized experience will tell, we build a strong customer bond to those who give it to us. An important lesson to learn for all who work with customers - and (as I might have mentioned elsewhere) in some way or another, we all do.

I know it is kind of cheating to take in videos, which strictly speaking are not something I read - but in memorable cases, I make exceptions. One such memorable case is the TED Talk by Simon Sinek on How great leaders inspire action - 18 minutes well spent if you're into inspirational leadership.

In Rebecca Elvy's Twitter-feed, I found Eric Torrence's post on Why It Matters That Your Best Ideas Come in the Shower. I have been fascinated by creative breaks ever since I read the book In the Shower With Picasso, written by Lene Tanggaard and Christian Stadil. It is an important topic to understand better: what can we do to become more creative?

Acknowledgement is important - it makes a world of difference to people that they feel that their contribution is recognized. Therefore, it is worthwhile to celebrate the successes of a team. We all know that time is money. But in There's On Time And There's Lombardi Time, Shep Hyken shares an important insight: "time is money, but I realized that if it meant sacrificing my customers’ confidence, it wasn’t worth it". It's important to realize that your customers' time is money as well - and if you must waste time, you would rather waste your money than their money.

We all know that in order to have a good work life, it is of the essence to feel a purpose with the things we are doing and to feel that we have meaningful tasks. But how does a leader provide her team with this sense of meaning and purpose? In the interesting article How to Make Work More Meaningful for Your TeamLewis Garrad and Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic discuss  the personality characteristics that determine leaders’ ability to make other people’s jobs more meaningful. An interesting set of qualities that we could all benefit from, if we mastered them.

Again, I hope the above has been able to inspire you in your reading, and I hope you stay tuned for seven new things next week.
